I am so happy to finally be nominated for the #ALSIceBucketChallenge! One of my best friends, Carlos Razo, nominated me. I have to be honest, earlier this year I had only heard of the disease, but I knew nothing about it. I didn’t realize how hideous of a disease it is and how many who are diagnosed don’t live more than 3 years after. Everyone knows of the famous genius, Stephen Hawking. If you ever wondered what put him in his wheelchair, it was a disease related to ALS.
Another thing you may not know about ALS is that it is one of the most underfunded in regards to research for the disease. Currently, there is no cure for it, so this is very tragic.
As most of you know, the point to this challenge to raise awareness for this little-known disease and to raise money. Although the ALS Association is the most well-known group being supported by this, I will be donating to the John Paul II Medical Research Institute (JP2MRI) instead. This is because the ALSA does both adult and embryonic stem cell research, but I will not support using embryos in this way. The JP2MRI is trying to raise $1 million for adult stem cell research. You can find out more and donate by going to their website here: http://www.jp2mri.org/capital-campaign.htm
Note: I ended up donating to the John Paul II Medical Research Institute when I did the challenge. However, I have been told by a friend who works for the ALSA Michigan chapter that all except one of the ALSA research programs using stem cells are using adult stem cells. The one study they fund is primarily funded by one donor. In addition, you can tell the association to not put your donations to that one, specific, studywhich uses embryonic stem cells.
Of course, I still felt better supporting a lesser known research program for two reasons (1) I know precisely there is no possibility of the funds going to something I disagree with and (2) the more programs doing different kinds of research the better. My only point is to say that donating to the ALSA isn’t entirely wrong if you add a comment to your donation. However, it still may be better to donate to another group if you have any worries. Just thought I’d clear up something I misspoke on from my video.
Without further adue, my Ice Bucket video! (Sorry for the blurriness. I had to do this quickly to be within the 24hrs I was nominated, and I didn’t check it before I recorded).
PS: For all the cynics out there, check out this link. I have read many critiques, and needless to say, we disagree.
